Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology

About Us

The Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology (ALAO) is a medical association located in Montgomery, Alabama, comprised of ophthalmologists who are licensed to practice medicine in Alabama and/or other states.

The purpose of ALAO is the promotion and advancement of ophthalmic medicine in all phases.
The business of the Society is conducted by a Board of Directors and Executive Director. Board meetings are held periodically at various locations throughout the State and annually at the S.E. Eye Regional Meeting each summer in Sandestin, Florida.
The Board elects a President, Vice-President, and Secretary-Treasurer to oversee its operations.
Membership is limited to licensed ophthalmologists with an M.D. or D.O. degree. Special Memberships are available upon request and approval by the Board of Directors, to licensed physicians from other sub-specialties of medicine.
ALAO co-hosts each summer with the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee Academies of Ophthalmology, an annual Southeast Eye Regional Scientific Meeting at Sandestin, Florida. The meeting is open to ophthalmologists, ophthalmic technicians, and office administrators from throughout the country.
ALAO works in conjunction with the Medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA), on legislative issues at the state and federal levels. See www.masalink.org.
ALAO is represented at the national level by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). See www.aao.org.
ALAO provides complimentary eye care services to disadvantaged Alabamians through its 501 (c) (3) EyeCare Alabama program. As of January, 2015, EyeCare Alabama had provided over One-Million Dollars ($1,000,000.00) of free eye care services to over four-thousand disadvantaged Alabamians.
