For the past several years the optometrists in Alabama have brought forth legislation to allow them to perform procedures that are defined as surgery under the current law. The Alabama Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons believe that only trained physicians who have graduated from medical school and a subsequent residency training have the full breadth of knowledge not only about the procedures, but also about the risks and complications to perform surgery. 

We ask that all ophthalmologists contact their local legislator and tell them surgery should only be performed by trained surgeons, and anything less endangers the health of Alabamians.
